If you’ve been lurking anywhere near U.S. politics on Twitter, you’ll know that Donald Trump tweets have become their own bonafide genre on the social media platform.
But we may see an end to all this when President-Elect Joe Biden takes office on January 20, 2021.
You see, since Trump has been the U.S. president for the past four years, he’s able to enjoy certain privileges on Twitter that allow his tweets to stay, even if they break the platform’s rules.
Twitter doles out these privileges to individuals that are considered ‘world leaders’ through their public interest policy.
“Twitter’s approach to world leaders, candidates, and public officials is based on the principle that people should be able to choose to see what their leaders are saying with clear context,” a Twitter spokesperson told The Verge.
“This means that we may apply warnings and labels, and limit engagement to certain tweets. This policy framework applies to current world leaders and candidates for office, and not private citizens when they no longer hold these positions.”
This has allowed a lot of Trump’s controversial tweets to remain on the platform.
However, it’s noteworthy to mention that the tweets are hidden and accompanied by Twitter notices stating that the content had violated guidelines.
One of those controversial tweets Trump has posted is a video of himself brutally taking down the CNN logo in a wrestling match:
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 2, 2017
People have likened moves like this to inciting violence against the media.
But fortunately for Twitter, and sadly for Trump, he’ll be losing all these special privileges once he becomes a civilian again.
There’s no telling what will happen to his account if all his controversial tweets remain beyond his term. Will Twitter impose a complete ban on @realDonaldTrump, or will they just remove his tweets?
I guess time will tell.
