Are you shocked seeing some nasty looking icons on your Android phone? Well, don’t be because Google recently changed the icon design of its apps.
Every once in a while, the design language of software, apps, and icons change. There’s a whole philosophy why design language is important and to summarize it: It’s used to describe the overall design of a digital product.
But sometimes, language gets lost in translation, and you’ll end up with a mishmash of color and design that might not relate to the average user.
However, Google did give a reason why this change came about. It said, “Our new Google Workspace brand reflects this more connected, helpful, and flexible experience and our icons will reflect the same.”
But the internet has different opinions about the new designs:

I’m on the fence about this new design. On one hand, I do like the consistency of the new icons. They all share the same colors and stand out from the other app icons on my phone.
But on the other hand, I find myself taking longer to open up any Google app because I have to make sure I’m launching the right app.
Google also said that everyone would get the new design in the coming weeks. It said. “In the coming weeks, you will see new four-color icons for Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Meet, and our collaborative content creation tools like Docs, Sheets, Slides that are part of the same family.
“They represent our commitment to building integrated communication and collaboration experiences for everyone, all with helpfulness from Google.”
If you don’t like the new icons, some phones can download icon packs and replace well-known icons on their phones with custom made ones found on the internet.
Nonetheless, these new icons are our new reality, unless Google plans to revert them, we’re just going to have to live with it.
